SCOR 2015-16 Executive Board: Call for Applications

Greetings SCOR Members,

It has been my great pleasure to serve as your SCOR President this year! We have had numerous events and activities to build community among graduate students of color. I hope that you have enjoyed our monthly socials, critical conversations about police brutality with the Black Student Union and Central Student government, public forum with the university regents along with the Rackham Student Government, viewing the movie, Dear White People, followed by a much needed discussion, and meeting several university guests including Alice Walker and Marc Lamont Hill. I'm extremely thankful for the opportunity to lead you all for this year.

The time has come for our current executive board to pass the torch to another group of excited, passionate, engaged scholars, and we would like to invite all of you to consider applying for a position on the executive board for the 2015-2016 academic year! Serving on our board provides a great opportunity to develop your leadership, team-building, communication, and facilitation skills (in addition to meeting some great individuals across campus and shaping the education experiences of graduate students at UM!). It would be our honor if you would complete our short application for a position (click here). Please apply by Saturday, April 4, 2015.

We have compiled a list of our current position descriptions (subject to modification) and qualities that we believe will be necessary to carry out the duties of the position. If you did not receive an e-mail from us and you are interested, please e-mail us at scor-eboard@umich.edu.  We will send you a copy of the current position descriptions. Please review these carefully as you make your decision to apply.

If you have any questions, please contact us at scor-eboard@umich.edu. We look forward to hearing from you, and hope that you will apply!

Have a great week and Go Blue!

Courtney McCluney

President, Students of Color of Rackham (SCOR) Executive Board  2014-15

M-CRAW & University of Michigan’s Women's Studies Department present: “Feminism & Community Psychology”

2015 CEW Mullin Welch Lecture

This year's guest lecturer is Michel Martin, an American journalist and correspondent for NPR and ABC News.

When:  Wednesday, April 1, 2015 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.

Where: Hussey Room, Michigan League, 911 North University Avenue, Ann Arbor, MI.

A reception will follow the lecture.

Free and open to the public but registration is requested.

Michel Martin is an American Journalist and Correspondent for NPR and ABC News. Martin came to NPR in 2006 and launched Tell Me More, a one-hour daily NPR news and talk show that aired on NPR stations nationwide from 2007-2014. She has spent more than 25 years as a journalist-first in print with major newspapers and then in television. Martin has also served as contributor and substitute host for NPR news magazines and talk shows, including Talk of the Nation and News & Notes.

The CEW Mullin Welch Series was established in 1989 by Frances Daseler and Marjorie Jackson in memory of their sister Elizabeth Charlotte Mullin Welch, bringing to campus lecturers who exemplify Elizabeth's characteristics: creativity, strength of character and expansive vision.

The 2015 Carol Hollenshead Award for Excellence in Promoting Equity and Social Change will be presented before the lecture. This year's recipients are Sandra Gregerman, Director of the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program, and Edward Goldman, Adjunct Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Boston Consulting Group Information Sessions

The Boston Consulting Group will be holding small group Office Hours sessions on Friday, April 3rd, 2015 for Michigan MD, JD, PhD, and post-doc students interested in full-time career opportunities at BCG, and our Bridge to BCG summer program.Because there are a limited number of available time slots, we ask that only those students available to start at BCG in 2015 or 2016 sign up at this time.

Office Hours are 30 minutes each and will take place on the first floor of the Michigan Union (the Tappan Room).  Office Hours are your opportunity to meet a BCG consultant in a small group setting to get to know BCG and learn more about a career in management consulting.

What is management consulting?

BCG consultants partner with clients from the private, public, and not-for-profit sectors in all regions to identify their highest-value opportunities, address their most critical challenges, and transform their enterprises.  An external perspective allows us to come up with creative, impactful, and sustainable solutions.

What do BCG consultants actually do?

Consultants "own" a piece of our client’s problem.  For example, one of our consultants is working today on developing a strategic plan for the roll-out of an innovative curriculum for one of the largest school districts in the Pacific Northwest.  Her role is to provide an assessment of the readiness of the district to undertake a broad change initiative to improve student achievement.

Recently, she flew to the school district to work side-by-side with the school district’s CIO on the recommendation that we will be making to the superintendent.  They'll be discussing how quickly the new initiative can be rolled out and coaching the CIO on how to present the recommendation.

What does BCG look for?

You don’t have to fit into a mold at BCG—there isn’t one.  We do, however, seek people with strong drive, relentless curiosity, the desire to create their own path, the ability to work collaboratively, and the passion and leadership to make an impact.  We want to hear about the strengths and capabilities you have developed from your experience both inside and outside the classroom or laboratory.

If you are interested in meeting with an ADC Consultant to learn more about the work we do at BCG and discuss full-time opportunities and our Bridge to BCG program, please join us Friday, April 3rd for an Office Hour session.

To sign up for a spot, please use the following link to register: https://talent.bcg.com/Events?folderId=10001032

To make the most of these sessions, we encourage students to come prepared with a few questions about consulting at BCG.

We look forward to helping you along the recruiting process.  Please contact Nick Cormier with any questions or concerns atmidwestadcrecruiting@bcg.com.

Application deadline: April 12, 2015

“Klassy Evening with the Kappas”

Food Sovereignty Conference: Call for Abstracts

Food Sovereignty is a conceptualization of world problems in food and agriculture that emerges from peasant farmers, fishers, and farmworkers. Emphasizing social equity rather than production and profit at its core, the conceptualization emerges from the international peasant umbrella organization, La Via Campesina. This Michigan Meeting will engage the scholarly community in analyzing all aspects of this new movement.

We invite submissions for posters on any topic relevant to food sovereignty, to be displayed at a poster session to be held during the Food Sovereignty Conference, May 28-29, 2015 on the campus of the University of Michigan.

Please submit title and abstract  (no more than 250 words) for evaluation for inclusion in the program.

Deadline for submission is April 15 and notification of acceptance is May 1.

All accepted poster presenters are expected to exhibit their poster in the poster area for the duration of the event.  Accepted poster presenters are also asked to be present at their poster during the poster lunch session on Friday, May 29, 12:30pm-2:00pm.

For more information & poster submission click here.

Minority Senior Scholarship Program

The  Minority Senior Scholarship Program (MSSP) at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC will expose medical students from minorities underrepresented in medicine to careers in academic pediatrics. Program and application information is available at www.childrensnational.org/MSSP. Applications are due by Friday, May 1, 2015.

Please contact Aisha Davis at abdavis@childrensnational.org  with any questions.
